Investigating a corruption case in health security, the special investigation service detained former Minister of Health Konstantinas Romualdas Dobrovolskis for two days on suspicions that he forged documents. The service also detained the secretary of the Ministry of Health, Vidmantas Jonas Zilinskas. Both persons allegedly conducted illegal competition procedures and contract signing in the purchase of special medical equipment.

U.S. Congressman Alcee L. Hastings met with President Arturas Paulauskas, informing him about receiving useful recommendations on relations with Belarus. While discussing Lithuania's initiatives to communicate with Belarus, Paulauskas suggested that America increase cooperation with Belorusian NGOs to foster democratic development.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Antanas Valionis (photo) participated in Luxembourg's last meeting of foreign ministers before May 1. The ministers negotiated EU constitution plans and further discussed the Partnership and Cooperation Agreement with Russia. The meeting involved discussions on the situation in the Middle East as well as the problems with Cyprus' reunification.

Prime Minister of the Netherlands Jan Peter Balkenende met with Prime Minister Algirdas Brazauskas, who confirmed Lithuania's strongest interest - speedy adoption of the EU constitution. The Netherlands takes over the EU presidency in July.

Valdas Jakutis, chairman of the alcoholic beverage enterprise Italiana International, was shot dead in Kaunas. During the recent presidential scandal, the State Security Department mentioned Jakutis in its report on possible threats to national security. Jakutis was also involved in deals with Anzori Aksentiev-Kikalishvili, a controversial Russian entrepreneur who was known to consort with advisers to former President Rolandas Paksas.
