Lithuanian foreign minister presents state award to US historian Snyder

VILNIUS – Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis, who is on a visit to the United States, on Thursday presented a Lithuanian state award to Timothy Snyder, professor of history at Yale University. 

"Your works remind us why history must not be forgotten. I thank you that with words and books you not only remind the world of the history of our region but also defend Ukraine," the minister said while awarding Snyder with the Commander's Cross of the Order for Merits to Lithuania.

Landsbergis and Snyder discussed "regional security issues and the need to continue and increase support for Ukraine", the Foreign Ministry said in a press release.

It quoted Landsbergis as saying that "history tends to repeat itself, as well as humanity's greatest mistakes".

"The lack of geopolitical foresight in recent times led to the fact that more than one nation lost its freedom and was condemned to long decades of occupation," he said during the conversation with the professor.
