RIGA - The US understands the current geopolitical situation and Russia's threat to European security, and this is confirmed by the US decision to increase support to strengthening the Baltic military capabilities, said Latvian Defense Minister Inara Murniece (National Alliance) after her meeting with US Ambassador to Latvia John Carwile today.
At the end of last year, the US Congress approved allocation of USD 225 million as a part of the Baltic Security Initiative in 2023.
The US also has confirmed its commitment to an uninterrupted presence of American troops in the Baltic states on a rotational basis.
The ambassador on Wednesday also met with Interior Minister Maris Kucinskis (National Alliance) to discuss mutual cooperation in the interior security.
The officials noted during the meeting that Latvian-US relations are close and intense, and there are positive results achieved in mutual cooperation.
The parties also discussed cooperation in providing support to Ukraine.
The US is Latvia's strategic partner and ally, and both countries have close cooperation in many areas.
