KEDAINIAI - President Gitanas Nauseda said on Sunday it was too early to draw conclusions about the movement of US troops in Europe, noting the final outcome of redeployments is not yet clear.
However, the head of state expressed hope that US forces would ultimately remain in Lithuania.
His remarks follow the Pentagon’s decision to halt the deployment of 4,000 US troops to Poland, which international media has linked to earlier plans to move some US personnel from Germany to other European nations. Observers suggest this could signal a redistribution of forces across Europe, although the total number of US troops in the region may decrease.
"At the moment, we are seeing a larger picture of redeployment, and perhaps that picture, the new mosaic, has not yet been fully assembled," Nauseda told reporters.
He added that he believes US leadership has a clear understanding of the Baltic region’s security needs and that the US military presence in Lithuania will continue.
The president also said it was impossible to predict the timing of final decisions on US troop placement in Lithuania, as this depends on Washington’s own determinations.
According to Nauseda, Lithuania can offer a "reliable partnership" and consistently fulfil its obligations.
Approximately 1,000 US troops are currently stationed in Lithuania.
