TALLINN - The heads of the Nordic and Baltic financial intelligence units (FIUs) are meeting in Tallinn on Tuesday and Wednesday for the inaugural meeting of a new strategic cooperation format.

For the first time, this format brings together all eight countries: Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Iceland, and Norway. The meeting is hosted by the Estonian Financial Intelligence Unit.

The meeting will establish a new NB8 working group, bringing together the heads of the region's FIUs. The goal of this cooperation is to foster a more unified, effective, and consistent regional approach to risks associated with money laundering, terrorist financing, and sanctions evasion.

Special attention will be paid to cooperation with the European Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorist Financing Authority (AMLA).

"Our region faces many common risks and challenges, including cross-border crime and fraud. Close cooperation between financial intelligence units allows us to respond to them more effectively and to speak with a stronger, more unified voice on issues important to the region. The Financial Intelligence Unit is honored to host the heads and leading experts of the Nordic and Baltic FIUs in Tallinn," said Matis Mäeker, head of the Estonian Financial Intelligence Unit.

In 2026, Estonia will also hold the presidency of the broader Nordic-Baltic Eight (NB8) intergovernmental cooperation format. This will create additional opportunities to discuss issues of regional and international importance and to strengthen cooperation.
