RIGA - Members of the European Parliament (EP) and Kaja Kallas, the European Union’s (EU) High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, will discuss on October 6 the undemocratic parliamentary elections that took place in Russia from September 18 to 20, LETA was informed by the EP’s press secretary in Latvia, Kristine Liepina.

MEPs are expected to condemn the recent Russian State Duma elections as undemocratic, as the Kremlin has further consolidated its control over the country.

EP members are also expected to assess the impact of the vote on Russian civil society and to condemn the illegal voting that took place in parts of Ukraine currently occupied by Moscow. The debate on Thursday, October 8, will be followed by a vote on the resolution.

Meanwhile, on Monday, October 5, the EP will discuss the humanitarian situation in Ukraine, with one speaker from each political group taking the floor.

As previously reported, the ruling party United Russia has won the so-called Russian parliamentary elections, securing more than half of the votes, according to Russian propaganda outlets.

According to results based on more than half of the ballots counted, United Russia received 57.9 percent of the vote, citing the election commission, according to the Kremlin-controlled agency Interfax.

In Russia’s three-day election farce, only parties that support Russian dictator Vladimir Putin and Russia’s war against Ukraine were allowed to participate. Russia’s only anti-war party, Yabloko, was barred from participating in the elections.

Despite protests from Kyiv and the international community, the so-called elections were held for the first time in the Russian-occupied Ukrainian territories of Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson regions, where voting often took place under the watch of occupying soldiers with guns.
