VILNIUS - The European Commission Representation in Lithuania on Friday unveiled a mural titled “Unity Fort” in Vilnius to mark Europe Day.
According to the Representation, the artwork by artist Timotiejus Norvila, featuring the word "Unity" and twelve stars representing the European Union, conveys a message that by acting together, Europeans are stronger, more resilient and better prepared to face global challenges while protecting freedom, democracy, the rule of law and human rights.
Marius Vascega, head of the European Commission Representation in Lithuania, said that in today's geopolitical context, European unity is becoming particularly important, and the work serves as a symbolic reminder of a common direction and Lithuania's upcoming presidency of the Council of the European Union.
The "Unity Fort" mural is a street art project designed to strengthen the public's connection with the European Union and emphasise the values of solidarity, unity and peace.
The mural's colours - blue and yellow - are recognisable as part of the European Union's visual identity, but they also create a broader symbolic field, giving an impression of light, openness and vitality.
The geometric composition, made of repeating shapes, merges into a whole, visually conveying the main idea of the work - European unity arising from different but interconnected parts.
The project aims to strengthen the public's bond with the European Union and highlight the values of solidarity, peace and cooperation. This is the first piece in a planned series of murals dedicated to the European Union, with similar works to be presented in other Lithuanian cities in the future.
Europe Day is celebrated on May 9. It is associated with the Schuman Declaration of 1950, which is considered the beginning of the modern European Union.
