RIGA - Ukraine is fighting with very limited resources and a solution must be found so that the frozen assets of the aggressor Russia can be transferred to Ukraine, thus bringing the end of the war closer, said Saeima Speaker Daiga Mierina (Greens/Farmers), welcoming Swiss Ambassador to Latvia Martin Michelet to Parliament on Tuesday.
The Saeima Press Service informed LETA that the parties discussed work on the transfer of Russia's frozen assets to Ukraine.
"The war in Ukraine is happening right now and we need to work together to strengthen the support provided to the Ukrainians," Mierina said.
Mierina and Michelet also discussed the creation of an international tribunal and the Saeima speakers expressed the hope that the aggressor, which has committed heinous crimes, will be brought to justice.
The Ambassador congratulated Latvia on its election to the UN Security Council and expressed confidence that Latvia would stand up for international law. Michelet also highlighted a number of Swiss investment projects in Latvia, including cancer treatment for children, and noted the potential of economic relations between Latvia and Switzerland.
Today's visit by the Ambassador was a farewell visit, and the Speaker thanked him for his contribution to strengthening cooperation between the two countries. Mierina emphasized that Latvia and Switzerland have very good cooperation both at parliamentary level and in other areas, especially culture.
Thanks to the Ambassador's initiative to strengthen cultural ties, in May this year Castagnola Steet was opened in Jurmala, while in Lugano a street dedicated to Latvian cultural icons Rainis and Aspazija "Via Rainis e Aspazija" was opened, the Saeima Press Service points out.
