RIGA - Saeima Speaker Daiga Mierina (Greens/Farmers) has signed a letter to the Nobel Prize Committee proposing that the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize be awarded to U.S. President Donald Trump, magazine Ir reports.

According to Ir, Mierina signed a letter initiated by the heads of the Israeli and U.S. parliaments, calling for the Nobel Peace Prize to be awarded to Trump. Although Mierina initially claimed that the signature was only a "test" and that the matter still needed to be discussed with Latvia's foreign policy decision-makers, she later confirmed that the signed letter had already been sent to Israel.

The decision was not fully coordinated with the prime minister, and Mierina admitted that the foreign minister was also critical of it, the newspaper writes, adding that the letter praised Trump as a "champion of peace", listing several international achievements of his administration.

The signing comes at a time when Trump's statements about a possible annexation of Greenland have exacerbated transatlantic tensions. Mierina defends Trump's actions, emphasizing his contribution to Israel and Europe's security, as well as Ukraine's ability to defend itself. Regarding Greenland, she believes that the issue it is about Arctic security rather than territorial ambitions.

As reported, Trump has announced that due to disagreements over Greenland, imports from eight EU countries will be subject to a 10 percent customs duty from February 1.

The new tariffs will apply to all imports from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, France, Germany, the UK, and the Netherlands. In the event of no agreement on the sale of Greenland to the United States, the tariff will be increased to 25 percent from June.
