RIGA - Russia is a global threat, stressed Saeima Speaker Daiga Mierina (Greens/Farmers), who today met with Irish Ambassador to Latvia Marcella Smyth.
The Saeima's Press Service told LETA that during the meeting, the Saeima Speaker stressed that the main focus in the high-tech sector is currently on the military and defense industry.
The Ambassador also agreed on the potential for cooperation, noting that the technology sector is one of the strongest in Ireland. The two sides also discussed ways to strengthen cooperation in space technology, where new potential has emerged in recent years.
Referring to the current geopolitical situation, Mierina thanked Ireland for supporting Latvia's candidacy to the UN Security Council and outlined the country's main objectives in this organization.
"A key ambition is to shine a light on the crimes committed by Russia. Through the dark pages of Latvian history, we can say with great responsibility that Russia is a country that cannot be relied upon," said the Saeima Speaker, noting, among other things, that there is seemingly no country left in the world that has not faced a wave of Russian disinformation.
Mierina said at the meeting that Russia is a global threat and that its human rights violations must continue to be highlighted. During the meeting, the parties also addressed the situation in the Middle East, noting the need to strengthen international and human rights.
Discussing bilateral relations between Latvia and Ireland, Mierina welcomed the increasing volume of trade. She also highlighted the fact that Ireland is home to the fifth largest Latvian diaspora and thanked the country for its support. The Ambassador emphasized that the Latvian diaspora enriches Irish culture, including through the folk dance schools and choirs that have been established.
