VILNIUS - Three Lithuanian female tourists who went missing in the Tatra Mountains on the Polish-Slovakian border were found on Saturday. However, one of them later dead, Polish media reported on Sunday.
According to the Polish broadcaster TVN24, rescuers found the woman early Saturday morning at the Liliowe mountain pass on the Polish-Slovak border. The woman was already unconscious when help reached her and was taken by helicopter to a hospital in Krakow but later died.
Two other Lithuanian women were found at a mountain pass on the Polish-Slovak border further away, near a hiking trail. One of them was taken by helicopter to Zakopane and the other to a shelter in the region.
According to the rescuers, the Lithuanian tourists were unprepared for their hike and did not have the right equipment and warm clothes.
44 rescuers and a helicopter crew took part in the search operation.
According to Polish media, weather conditions for tourism in the Tatra Mountains were poor on Friday and worsened at night. The peaks were shrouded in thick fog, which limited visibility, and the temperature dropped to 4 degrees Celsius, and there also strong winds of up to 120 km per hour in places and heavy rain.
