VILNIUS - Lietuvos Energija (Lithuanian Energy) has announced the last in a series of public tenders aimed at to develop wind energy in Lithuania. Company spokeswoman Aurelija Trakseliene said last week that the winning bidder could build wind-power plants anywhere in the country, except locations where tenders had already been held. Interested parties have until Dec. 1 to submit their bids and the winner will be named Dec. 21.

"This is the last of the planned tenders for the construction of wind power plants by 2010. We expect the winners of all the wind power tenders will fulfill their commitments to build the power plants and as a result increase the production of green energy in Lithuania," said Vladas Paskevicius, Lithuanian Energy's energy system director and chairman of the tender commission.
Lithuania is committed to increasing its electricity generation from renewable resources, such as water, wind or biogas, to 7 percent by 2010. Green energy, mostly from hydro power plants, currently accounts for around 3 percent of the country's power output.

One of the benefits of establishing the Baltic Ring project, which connects the grids of the greater Baltic Sea region, is its ability to produce anywhere and sell anywhere. Grid integration offers greater opportunities for the marketability of electricity produced by non-fossil fuel and renewable methods, often referred to as Green Energy.
The final public tender was announced on Sept. 29 to construct wind power plants and connect them into a 110 kilovolt electricity transmission network.
