RIGA - A woman who last week had abandoned a newborn baby on a street in Riga has been placed under arrest in accordance with a court ruling, LETA learned.
According to the latest information provided to LETA by the State Police, the criminal offense has been qualified as attempted murder, with the perpetrator being aware that the victim's helpless state.
Information obtained in the investigation so far suggests that the woman, is most likely the infant's mother, but the investigation is ongoing and forensic test results are still being awaited. The woman's motives are being probed.
Police representatives said that the woman is a citizen of Moldova.
As reported, a newborn baby girl wrapped in a blanket was found lying on a street in the Kengarags neighborhood in Riga in the early morning hours of last Tuesday. An investigation of the case established that an unidentified woman had left the child on the street at around 3:40 a.m. on Tuesday.
The woman who had left the child on the street was later apprehended. The girl has been placed in a foster family.
How long the newborn baby girl will stay with the foster family will depend on the further investigation of the case, which will also determine whether the baby is legally free.
