RIGA - The Riga City Court has handed down a jail sentence of 13 years and four years of probation supervision to a man for sexually assaulting a nine-year-old girl in the stairwell of a building in Kengarags, Riga, the prosecutor's office informed LETA.
In summer 2024, the man spotted a girl on a street in the Kengarags neighborhood and started following her. When she entered an apartment building, the offender took advantage of the girl's helpless situation and sexually assaulted her by touching her private parts and then fled.
It took a couple of days for the police to identify the offender and detain him.
According to the prosecution, the assault disrupted the victim's normal mental and moral development, as well as caused psychological consequences consistent with mental trauma.
The court imposed the sentence requested by the prosecutor. The ruling may still be appeal to the Riga Regional Court.
