VILNIUS - Lithuanian Prime Minister Gintautas Paluckas believes that Pope Leo XIV will respond to broad public expectations by steering the Catholic Church toward more liberal policies.
"Whether this marks continuity or the start of a new era in church policy remains to be seen," Paluckas told reporters on Friday.
"But based on his first statements and background, the new pope appears to be quite modern and capable of responding to the needs of modernity or of the general public for a more liberal or more flexible church policy," he added.
According to the prime minister, the election of the new pope shows that the Catholic Church is united.
