Lithuania to seek EU funding for security, military mobility during 2027 presidency

VILNIUS - Lithuania will seek funding for security, military mobility and strategic infrastructure projects during its presidency of the Council of the European Union in 2027, Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevicius said.

He discussed the issue in Brussels on Tuesday during a meeting with European Parliament President Roberta Metsola. Sinkevicius said the new European Union budget must reflect Europe's changed security reality while creating conditions for economic growth and regional resilience.

Lithuania will seek to ensure sufficient funding for the Connecting Europe Facility and military mobility, especially for projects such as "Rail Baltica" and "Via Baltica". The meeting also covered the 2028-2034 European Union Multiannual Financial Framework, security investments, access to the competitiveness fund and Europe's economic growth prospects.

The prime minister and the European Parliament president also discussed support for Ukraine. Sinkevicius stressed the importance of continued European Union military and financial support, stricter sanctions enforcement and a united contribution from member states.

In addition, they discussed the European Union accession process for Ukraine and Moldova.
