RIGA - Latvia's priority in the context of the war in Iran is to ensure that international priorities such as support for Ukraine, limiting Russia's capabilities, and improving NATO's capabilities are not lost, Latvian Foreign Minister Baiba Braze (New Unity) emphasized in an interview with TV3 on Monday.

When asked whether the attacks on Iran launched by the US and Israel could escalate into a larger war, Braze replied that anything could happen, but that no one is interested in the conflict spreading. She also said she had heard that some of Iran's remaining officials were signaling that they were open to a regulated exit from the conflict, but that anything could happen.

Braze noted that Iran's entire leadership team has been liquidated and the remaining leaders are largely decentralized, so the conflict could continue in a decentralized manner and unfold in various ways, including protracted conflict.

However, the minister hopes that the result could be that the new Iranian regime will be more open to cooperation with the rest of the world.

When asked about the number of Latvian nationals and the threat to them in the region, Braze said that most Latvian national -around 2,000-are currently in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

All European Union countries care about their citizens and are working together to figure out if and how to help them. The minister is aware that there is an option to travel to Oman and then onward from there, although the UAE itself does not consider this a very safe solution and believes it is safer to wait it out in the UAE.
