RIGA - Latvia's climate neutrality goals must be well thought out and proportionate, taking into account the views of industry representatives, Latvian President Edgars Rinkevics stressed at a meeting with Climate and Energy Minister Kaspars Melnis (Greens/Farmers) today.
Rinkevics' adviser Martins Dregeris told LETA that during the meeting the parties discussed current draft laws related to the sector, the draft electricity transmission service tariff, the ministry's proposals for measures to reduce bureaucracy, as well as the process of developing renewable energy - solar and wind parks - in Latvia.
As reported, the government this month endorsed the Economic Sustainability Law drafted by the Climate and Energy Ministry.
It aims to promote the sustainability of the country's economy by fostering competitiveness and moving the country towards climate change mitigation and climate resilience in order to achieve climate neutrality and national climate targets in line with EU and international commitments, taking into account social and environmental aspects, by 2050 at the latest. The draft law is based on the commitments of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and its Paris Agreement.
