RIGA - Latvia and Tunisia are planning to hold political consultations between their Foreign Ministries to discuss strengthening cooperation and to promote a more active political dialogue, LETA was told at the Latvian Foreign Ministry.

On Thursday, the Foreign Ministry's Inspector-General, Ilgvars Klava, welcomed an accreditation visit from the new non-resident Tunisian Ambassador to Latvia, Taoufik Chebbi.

Klava noted with satisfaction the current cooperation between Latvia and Tunisia, which is gradually expanding in the fields of tourism, education and science. He underlined that Latvia is interested in stepping up the political dialogue, promoting economic cooperation and diversifying trade. Klava welcomed Tunisia’s cooperation with the European Union (EU) and called for its strengthening.

The Tunisian ambassador voiced his commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and cooperation in the EU framework, as well as expressed satisfaction with Latvia's membership in the UN Security Council in 2026-2027.

The diplomats also exchanged views on Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine and the situation in the Middle East. Klava thanked Tunisia for voting in support of Ukraine at the UN General Assembly, emphasizing the destructive impact that Russian aggression has on global security.

Diplomatic relations between Latvia and Tunisia were established on 26 June 1992.

Ambassador Taoufik Chebbi resides in Warsaw, Poland.
