RIGA - The 2025 European Men's Basketball Championships (Eurobasket 2025) in Riga this year brought an additional EUR 52.3 million into Latvia's economy, Saeima Education, Culture and Science Committee's Sports Subcommittee was informed on Tuesday.
A study carried out according to an internationally recognized methodology shows that direct economic impact of Eurobasket 2025 amounted to almost EUR 83 million, and an additional indirect economic impact to EUR 51.5 million.
The cost of hosting the competition, the draw and FIBA General Assembly amounted to EUR 18.3 million, of which less than EUR 10 million was provided from Latvia's state budget. Around EUR 15.5 million returned directly to the national budget in taxes.
In total, hosting Eurobasket 2025 contributed EUR 52.3 million to the national economy, that is, every euro allocated from the state budget for hosting the tournament contributed EUR 5.3 to the national economy, according to the report.
Eurobasket 2025 took place in Riga from August 27 to September 14. Germany defeated Turkey in the final, while Greece claimed bronze medals.
The 31 matches played in Riga were attended by 195,101 spectators, including the presidents of Germany, Finland and Georgia, as well as the prime minister of Estonia.
