RIGA - Aleksandrs Bartasevics (Together for Latvia), whom the smart administration and regional development minister had sacked as Rezekne mayor, was on Friday reelected as Rezekne mayor.
Seven Rezekne councilors voted for Bartasevics, while rival candidate Eriks Terumnieks received five votes. Jurijs Talalajevs of Together for Latvia was absent from the council meeting.
As reported, the electoral list of Bartasevics' Together For Latvia and Latvia First (LPV) led by Ainars Slesers, have won a majority in the Rezekne City Council.
The list, represented by Bartasevics, won more than half, or 50.55 percent, of the vote, which gave it eight seats and a majority in the municipality.
Only three lists will be represented on the city council. Three seats went the alliance of the National Alliance, New Unity and For Latvia's Development, which received 17.6 percent of the vote, and an alliance of the Latvian Green Party, the Latvian Association of Regions and the New Conservative Party, received 11.91 percent of the votes in Rezekne, giving it two seats.
Other lists failed to overcome the 5 percent barrier, including the Harmony party which Bartasevics used to represent for many years, received 2.75 percent of the votes.
