RIGA - The number of abortions among under-age girls in Latvia has significantly decreased since 2010, according to information compiled by the Central Statistical Bureau.
In 2023, a total of 4,611 abortions will be registered in Latvia, including 2,700 induced abortions. Since 2010, the number of abortions has decreased significantly - 10,820 abortions were registered in the country then, 5,009 in 2022 and 4,611 in 2023. Correspondingly, the number of induced abortions has also decreased sharply - from 7,443 abortions in 2010 to 2,700 such manipulations in 2023.
The trend is similar among under-age girls. In total, 58 abortions (43 induced) was registered in Latvia in 2023 for girls aged 15-17, as well as three abortions for girls under 14.
This is about a fivefold decrease: in 2010, 10 abortions were registered for girls under 14, and 279 for girls aged 15-17.
At the beginning of 2025, Latvia had a population of 1.857 million, of which 344,000 or 18.5 percent were children under the age of 17. Since the beginning of 2016, the number of children has decreased by 8,800 or 2.5 percent.
