TALLINN - Karen Ellemann, secretary general of the Nordic Council of Ministers, is to pay a visit to Estonia on Thursday and Friday.

During the visit, Ellemann will attend the annual meeting of the board of governors of the Nordic Investment Bank (NIB) and meet with representatives of Estonian ministries, civil society and the private sector.

Karen Ellemann has extensive political expertise from several important areas. She was a member of the Danish Parliament from 2007 to 2022 and she has also been a member of the Nordic Council. She has also been minister for fisheries, minister for gender equality, and minister for Nordic cooperation, as well as minister for social affairs, minister of the interior, and minister for the environment. Ellemann is also the former chair of the Nordic Association in Denmark.

Although Ellemann is already very familiar with the Nordic region, she also feels a strong personal connection with the Baltic countries. Ellemann's father, Uffe Ellemann-Jensen, was a great friend of Estonia, a long-time close friend of President Lennart Meri and an ardent supporter of restoring Estonia's independence.

"Nordic and Baltic cooperation is more important than ever before. In my view, stronger cooperation is the answer to the problems we face. We can solve so many of them if we work together," Ellemann said.

In addition to attending political meetings, the secretary general will also meet the employees of the Estonian representation of the Nordic Council of Ministers. Since a new cooperation program of the Nordic Council is being planned for the years 2025-2027, the discussions will focus on the current work of the representative office and future opportunities.
