EAT OUT

Italian - Casa Nostra

Where Italy begins in Riga. Italian owned. 2 Italian chefs. Elizabetes iela 10b. 11:00 – 22:00. 7 days
Reservations +371 66 956 609
Riga’s newest Italian restaurant located in the city’s historic Art Nouveau district is a genuine reflection of the Italian owners who see themselves as de-facto gastronomic ambassadors of Italy. Casa Nostra is solely about food and the dining experience,  provided by Italians who know their food traditions and Italy’s numerous regional cuisine cultures. A devilishly tempting menu — includes pizza; a wide buffet selection of Italian antipasti; a wide selection of traditional pasta dishes; main dishes such as Saltimbocca and Fiorentina;  and specials of the day that change regularly.   Last week the Estonian president and his wife dined on veal scaloppini.

In his search for silent horizons able to lift you up above the daily routine, Peteris Vasks has found wisdom called a ‘new simplicity’ or ‘new spirituality.’ He is one of the first Latvians whose music has found its way far and wide. Whatever is Vasks’ musical expression, the task remains the same: to keep the light on and speak to every soul. Companions and friends will greet him in his 70th birthday, and there is a surprise on – a brand new musical vision along with the scores written earlier.

Vienna Classics. Concert Performance at Spikeri. Beethoven and other planets - 19:00 @ Riga, Spikeri Concert Hall
The eccentric and exciting pianist Juris Zvikovs has replaced one of John Cage’s “screwed” pianos for an “ordinary” Steinway, and now he is inviting people to take a closer look at the sound observatories of the great Viennese composer Ludwig van Beethoven and others.  Those who attend this improvised “pianist think tank” will hear a two-part solo concert at which Zvikovs promises to reveal the thinking of a pianist, to share technical observations about the eclectic nature of piano music in the 19th, 20th and 21st century, and to introduce people to the sound planets of Beethoven and other composers – each of which has its own unrepeatable orbit.  Alongside the Steinway & Sons piano on the Spikeri stage will be a harmonica, a squeeze toy, a toy piano and other tools of sound that have little to do with the piano as such, but may have been derived in their day from the popular black-and-white keyboard instrument.

Composers who have drawn on the magical folk art of this ancient and nomadic people include Liszt, Brahms, Bartok,  Sarasate, Kreisler and, of course, the performers themselves.
