KYIV - Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Monday signed a request for Ukraine's membership in the European Union (EU).

The document has been sent to Brussels.

"We appeal to the European Union for the immediate accession of Ukraine via a new special procedure," the Ukrainian leader said in a new video address.

"Our goal is to be together with all Europeans and, most importantly, to be on an equal footing. I'm sure it's fair. I'm sure it's possible," Zelensky said.

Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics (New Unity) said on social networks that the Foreign Ministry has submitted to the government Latvia's national position envisaging support for Ukraine's membership in the EU and granting Ukraine the status of candidate country.
