Verdi’s majestic and epic opera is one of his finest and most frequently performed; the skill required to elevate “Aida” to the greatness it deserves is a challenge for any director, but the Estonian National Opera’s Tobias Kratzer has packed this modern version full of innovation. Transporting an opera set amongst the towering pyramids of alluring Egypt, for which it is ideally suited, to a soaring theatrical space such as the Arena di Verona, and stuffing it into the tight dimensions of an opera stage, has the potential to fail miserably.
