Lithuania celebrated on March 11 its 30th anniversary of the proclamation of independence. One of the signatories of the 1990 Independence Act, Rimvydas Valatka, a well-known Lithuanian journalist and public life commentator, states bluntly that Lithuania has become “a nearly” European state over the 30 years of freedom. “Yet it makes me sad that we can still bump into droves of anti-Semites, homophobes, various plot creators and fanatics here, as well as those who still grumble that the life under the Soviets was better than now,” Valatka says.
