RIGA - Latvian President Edgars Rinkevics during a meeting with Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev on Tuesday expressed hope that Azerbaijan and Armenia will manage to agree a peace deal.

As the Latvian president's adviser Martins Dregeris told LETA, the two presidents met to discuss their countries' bilateral relations, cooperation in international organizations, as well as international security issues. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

During the conversation, Rinkevics noted Latvia's unwavering support for Azerbaijan's sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders.

The Latvian president repeatedly extended his condolences to the people of Azerbaijan and to the families of the victims of the crash of the Azerbaijani passenger plane, stressing the importance of an independent investigation.

As reported, tensions between Azerbaijan and Armenia have remained high since Baku took control of the "de facto" independent Armenian republic of Nagorno-Karabakh in a one-day offensive in September 2023.

The operation triggered a mass exodus of the majority of Nagorno-Karabakh's population - more than 100,000 people - to Armenia.

Yerevan is concerned that Azerbaijan, emboldened by its success in Karabakh, could invade Armenian territory.

As reported, the Latvian president is attending the World Economic Forum in Davos from today to Thursday.
