RIGA - In the current geopolitical situation, residents should not fall into hysteria, said Andris Teikmanis, former Latvian ambassador to Russia, Germany and the United States, in an interview on Latvian Television this morning.
Today marks 35 years since the Latvian Popular Front came to power in the Riga municipality. 35 years ago, on February 16, 1990, a historic meeting of the Riga Council took place, during which the Latvian Popular Front won the majority and took over the leadership of the capital's municipality, electing Teikmanis as the council's chairman. The monopoly of power of the Communist Party was abolished and democratic processes of transformation in the administration of the capital began.
Teikmanis was asked how we can look to the future with this "baggage", with which we have been marching from February 16, 1990 until now, Teikmanis said that people who have lived through that time today perceive all changes much more calmly or at least more collected, they do not fall into hysteria.
"I don't think this is necessary at the moment. We live in a much, much safer world than it was then. Back then, life could end at any moment - that was a possibility as well," he said.
