TALLINN - During the ongoing trial at the Pärnu County Court on Tuesday, senior prosecutor Eliisa Sommer sought a four-year prison sentence for Kairi Kuusemaa, who is accused of killing her newborn and abuse of corpse, Postimees reports.
The prosecutor sought a prison sentence of three years and nine months for the murder of the newborn and an additional six months for corpse abuse. As a combined sentence, Sommer seeks a four-year prison term without the possibility of a suspended sentence. According to the prosecutor, the start of the sentence should be counted from March 9 of last year, when Kuusemaa was detained in Morocco.
Kuusemaa declined to testify during the court hearing on Tuesday.
"I do not wish to testify today or at all. There is a compelling reason for this. What has been done to me so far is psychological trauma. I am mentally unable to give testimony," she said.
Kuusemaa's sister Karin also participated in the hearing via video link and stated that she would exercise her legal right not to testify.
"Since I gave a three-hour testimony to the investigator in the spring, I am using my right not to testify again. Nothing has changed since then," she said.
According to the indictment, Kuusemaa caused the death of her newborn in February 2024. She is also charged with abuse of corpse for failing to bury the infant's body according to customary practices. Instead, she allegedly left the naked body in a field, where it was discovered on the morning of Feb. 5 by a dog from a nearby household in the same village.
