Prison censors read about 900 letters a day

Special censors who are working in Latvia’s prisons each day read about 900 letters sent to or written by inmates, the Prison Administration informed. Letters are one of inmates’ main legal ways of communication with the outside world. In Latvia’s ten penitentiaries, the censors read about 900 letters a day, as they are expected to check all the incoming and outgoing mail. The amount of mail that has to be checked at Latvia’s largest prisons – Riga Central Prison and Daugavgriva Prison – is higher, with each censor processing around 180...
