Latvians celebrate hockey victory, quarterfinals

RIGA – Latvia's hockey team made the quarterfinals of the world championship by beating Austria 5 – 2 in the last game of the qualifying round. Fans in Riga celebrated by blaring horns and shouting in Riga Old Town throughout the night, which came between two public holidays.

Latvia's stunning victory put it in the world's top eight teams. Its next match will be with either Slovakia, Sweden or Finland.
Prime Minister Indulis Emsis said that he was thrilled by the achievement of team and has promised that the government would soon decide on how to best reward the athletes.
Emsis said that sometime later this week he may even find the time to go to Prague and support the Latvian team.
