Latvians bicker over new language law

RIGA - Latvia's Parliament easily passed a controversial language law July 8 that seeks to strengthen the place of Latvian within society. However, the continued life of the bill is expected to be far less comfortable as it has attracted strident domestic and international criticism.Passage of the law was already assured before debate began, since the combined forces of the People's Party, For Fatherland and Freedom, and the Social Democrats, a total 57 votes in the 100-member Parliament, had promised to back it.
