The famous poet and writer Maris Caklais died on Dec. 13. Caklais was the editor of the popular Latvian literary magazine Karogs. During Latvia's independence movement he was also the editor of Literatura un Maksla (Literature and Art), a journal that played a significant role in the country's fight for freedom.The Riga Regional Court sentenced Leonards Gromovs (aka Butelis) to eight years in prison for a 2000 bombing that took place at the Centrs shopping mall in Riga Old Town.
