Single-hull tanker causes uproar, departs from Ventspils

RIGA - An ageing tanker, the Geroi Sevastopolya, loaded with 50,000 tons of crude, departed from the Ventspils port early in the morning of Dec. 6 after having sparked a protest and demands for a complete examination from Spain and the European Commission.The 24-year-old Russia-owned Sevastopolya was scheduled to follow along the same route as the infamous Prestige tanker that sank last year off the coast of Spain on its way to Singapore.The government held up the ship until inspectors from the EU had a chance to examine the ageing oil tanker after which it could no longer detain the vessel...
