Latvia extends final 'yes' to EU

RIGA - In the last referendum of the current round of EU enlargement, Latvians voted Sept. 20 in favor of their country officially joining the European Union next May. The outcome of the historic vote proved remarkably similar to that of neighboring Estonia, whose poll took place Sept. 14, as in both nations 67 percent of those casting ballots said "yes" to accession.The day after the Latvian referendum President Vaira Vike-Freiberga described the results as "proof of Latvia's democratic maturity" at a press conference with local and foreign journalists."For the first time in the history of...
