Austerity measures undermine Repse Cabinet

RIGA - A dogged drive by Prime Miniser Einars Repse to reduce the fiscal deficit to 2 percent of GDP has thrown the Cabinet into disarray, with ministers decrying obligatory spending cuts and even threatening to resign. Even though the state budget is slated to increase by 150 million lats (250 million euros) next year, nearly every ministry will have to slash expenses by 6.45 percent — a figure finalized on July 29 — in order to meet the governmentnt's budget parameters.Overall, the government has required the ministries to cut their spending by 50.8 million lats.All ministries except Cult...
