Mass protest planned to oppose education reform

RIGAThousands of protesters are expected to demonstrate May 23 against the termination of state-funded education in Russian in what organizers say could be the largest protest in Latvia since tens of thousands rallied for independence in the late 1980s.The protest will be staged in Riga's Esplanade Park - a few hundred feet from the Freedom Monument - on the day before the Eurovision Song Contest in Riga, when several hundred foreign journalists will be milling around the city.Riga City Council approved the demonstration earlier this week and is preparing for at least 10,000 protesters.Igor...
