High court orders Lavents retrial

RIGALatvia's Supreme Court on Feb. 13 ordered a retrial of ex-Banka Baltija Chairman Aleksandrs Lavents, who was sentenced in 2001 to nine years in prison on large-scale embezzlement and other charges.The ruling comes two weeks after Supreme Court Judge Valda Eilande ordered Lavents and Talis Freimanis, who was sentenced to six years in jail for his role in the 1995 Banka Baltija collapse, released from police custody.Speaking to journalists, Eilande said the high court's ruling was based on last year's verdict by the European Court of Human Rights, which said Lavents did not receive a fair...
