Rigans walking on thin ice

RIGAIt's a slightly surreal spectacle. If you look out over the vast expanse of the frozen Daugava River, you'll see dozens of huddled up figures scattered all around it. Some of them are right out in the middle. Some linger closer to the banks. Their huge footprints are discernible in the thin crust of snow that covers the ice. These are Riga's fearless ice fishermen, angling for a catch in sub-zero temperatures and lacerating winds. The frighteningly wide Daugava River has been frozen over since December. Since then the fishermen have been out in force, not only braving the freezing weath...
