VILNIUSAn officer with Lithuania's State Security Department was recently dismissed after it was revealed that he had attempted to recruit journalists as informants, causing deep concern over the competency of the country's intelligence agencies.Mecys Laurinkus, director of the State Security Department, told reporters on Jan. 31 that Valerius Saveljevas had been relieved of his duties and that an inquiry had been launched to investigate the incident.The daily Respublika reported that Saveljevas had approached its correspondents in an attempt to gain sensitive information about the newspape...
