City council promises Eurovision show will go on

RIGAA committee on the Riga City Council last week rejected a proposal to cut funding for this year's Eurovision Song Contest, putting to rest fears in Latvia and elsewhere that the popular event would be canceled.The City Council's budget committee said it would ensure that organizers of the 2003 event, slated to be held on May 24 in Riga, receive the full 670,000 lats (1.1 million euros) promised for promotional events and infrastructure improvement.Earlier, the staging of the event was thrown into doubt when some committee members proposed cutting the amount by one-third to deal with a m...
