Ministers give themselves fat raise

RIGALatvia's government on Jan. 7 adopted a resolution that trebles ministers' monthly salaries, securing them wages almost twice as high as their Estonian and Lithuanian counterparts.Effective immediately, Prime Minister Einars Repse will earn 2,200 lats (3,660 euros), up from the monthly wage of 650 lats paid to his predecessors and 13 times Latvia's average monthly wage of about 170 lats.Ministers who previously received 615 lats per month will now make 2,000 lats per month, the same wage paid to President Vaira Vike-Freiberga.In Estonia, the prime minister makes the equivalent of 1,380 ...
