Lithuania gets new president

VILNIUSIn a shocking turn of events Lithuanians elected Rolandas Paksas with a solid margin as their next president, replacing the widely favored incumbent Valdas Adamkus in a run-off poll that stunned the Baltics.With all 2,015 polling locations having declared their results Paksas received 54.91 percent of the vote and Adamkus 45.09 percent. In actual votes, Paksas tallied 776,764, with Adamkus garnering 637,908.The unanticipated defeat in the run-off followed a first round poll in which Adamkus soundly defeated a record 17 candidates.In that poll on Dec. 22 the incumbent won 35.06 percen...
