RIGA - Three men broke into an apartment on Driskas Street in Jelgava and shot a man dead on Sept. 1. His wife and two children were badly injured in the raid, and the family's youngest son, aged 12, later died in hospital.

The woman sustained two gunshot wounds, one in her shoulder and one in the arm, Zenta Tretjaka, Jelgava's criminal police chief, told The Baltic Times. The older brother was shot in the leg and arm.

Initial information from the police says that the family was selling marijuana. Investigators are looking into any connections between the family "business"and the shoot-out. The man shot dead, identified only as Sergeys, had a previous criminal record with the Jelgava police.

Tretjaka confirmed that an investigation is underway. One man has been detained, but he has not yet been accused. "We are sure that three men were involved in the attack, so we are still looking for the other two,"she said.

Jelgava police call this murder under aggravating circumstances, a crime that could bring a sentence of life if the perpetrators are found guilty. Tretjaka said that the killers stole from the apartment but refused to say whether this included marijuana.
