RIGA - As Christmas nears, tinsel, reindeer and canned carols give Riga an atmosphere similar to many European or American cities. But through the new glitter some see an older message that Communism couldn't dim.The most visible sign of changing times is in shop windows as retailers use the season to top up their takings. Aija Klava, marketing manager for the Centrs department store in Riga's Old Town, expects business in her enterprise to increase by 50 percent over normal turnover in the lead-up to Christmas in spite of a painful recession.
