TALLINN - Valdas Adamkus is the most expensive president in the Baltic countries, according to a survey by the Estonian daily Postimees published on March 15. Postimees compared gross salaries of the presidents, prime ministers, parliamentary speakers, defense force commanders and mayors of the capital cities.

The Estonian president, prime minister and parliamentary speaker get exactly the same salary, although benefits and perks vary widely.

The salary of Einars Repse, the head of Latvia's central bank, with the additional perks and benefits, dwarfs the official income of his Lithuanian counterpart Reinoldijus Sarkinas.

The newspaper stressed that Estonian parliamentary Speaker Toomas Savi, Estonian Defense Force Commander Rear Adm.Tarmo Kouts and Tallinn Mayor Juri Mois earn much more than the same positions in the other two countries.

The figures published in Postimees quote pre-tax salaries. Income tax rates in Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania are 25 percent, 26 percent and 13 percent, respectively.
