Teachers walk as talks fall apart

RIGA - More than 42,000 teachers went on strike for one day on Nov. 16 after last-minute talks with the government failed to achieve a compromise.The Education and Scientific Trade Workers Union of Latvia met with the Minister of Education Silva Golde a day earlier in hopes of a reconciliation, but the sides remained millions of lats apart.The trade union has demanded a salary increase, which would double the pay of its lowest-qualified teachers from 50 lats ($86) per month, the current minimum wage, to at least 100 lats per month for a 21-hour work week, starting on Jan. 1.More qualified t...
