Central bank to consider Vilniaus Bankas' bid

VILNIUS (BNS) - The Bank of Lithuania is still not sure whether it will consider Vilniaus Bankas' application to buy a stake in Hermis Bank at the end of January.

Audrius Misevicius, the central bank's deputy board chairman, said the bank is collecting the information about the applicant and is evaluating the possible acquisition.

"We want this issue to be resolved and there should be no delays in this. We are interested in a quick solution to all issues," said Misevicius.

Vilniaus Bankas, Lithuania's leading private bank, has applied to the central bank for permission to purchase 43 percent of shares in the second-largest Hermis Bank.

In 1997, the central bank postponed a final decision on the purchase for an indefinite period, citing Vilniaus Bankas' failure to follow the application procedure, insufficient capital and the upcoming privatization of the country's Zemes Ukio Bankas.

It was unclear what effect Vilniaus Bankas' purchase was likely to have on the process. Misevicius could not say if these hurdles had been removed.

He said he was not completely sure whether Vilniaus Bankas now had sufficient capital for such investment.

"This issue has been unresolved because it is very complicated, not because of unwillingness to solve it," Misevicius said.
