Recipe Plus invests EUR 20 million in development of the most advanced pharmaceutical supply centre in the Baltics

In order to strengthen competitiveness, improve efficiency of pharmaceutical supplies, and enhance resilience of Latvia’s critical healthcare infrastructure, locally-owned Latvian pharmaceutical wholesaler AS Recipe Plus is investing EUR 20 million in development of a new pharmaceutical and medical supplies distribution centre in Riga. Designed to be the most advanced facility of its kind in the Baltics, the centre will improve efficiency of day-to-day medicine deliveries, strengthen availability of medicines across Latvia, and improve supply security during crises and emergencies.

The new logistics centre has reached the topping-out stage, which marks a major milestone in construction of the facility. Scheduled for completion in spring 2027, the centre represents one of the largest private investments in Latvia’s critical pharmaceutical supply infrastructure to date. Once operational, the centre will significantly strengthen security of medicine supplies, resilience of the system, and uninterrupted availability of medicines throughout Latvia.

“A country cannot be resilient and prosperous without strong companies that invest in development and growth. Latvia’s security depends not only on our defence capabilities, but also on the resilience of critical infrastructure and the ability of businesses to provide society with vital services under all circumstances. Access to medicines and medical supplies is one of these priorities. That is why this substantial investment in modern pharmaceutical supply infrastructure is so welcome, particularly as it is being made by a Latvian company. It once again demonstrates that Latvian businesses are prepared to take responsibility not only for their own growth, but also for the country’s long-term security and competitiveness,” Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs said at the topping-out ceremony.

More than EUR 6 million of the total investment will be dedicated to advanced automation and robotics systems. These technologies will be deployed across the 13,800-square-metre facility to improve operational efficiency, ensure exceptionally high accuracy in product picking and order assembly, and significantly speed up deliveries, creating infrastructure necessary for efficient and uninterrupted supplies of medicines and medical products even in emergency situations.

Andris Kužnieks, Head of the European Commission Representation in Latvia, said that the project supported the European Union’s broader efforts to strengthen security of pharmaceutical supply chains. “Through the Critical Medicines Act and other initiatives, the EU has clearly identified the need to strengthen Europe’s capacity to ensure access to critical medicines. This includes expanding the production of medicines and active pharmaceutical ingredients in Europe, building more resilient supply chains, strengthening cooperation between Member States, including through joint procurement, and reducing strategic dependencies on third countries. In the current geopolitical environment, the security of EU supply chains, the resilience of critical infrastructure and economic security are a shared responsibility of the public and private sectors. Strengthening security of medicine supplies and ensuring uninterrupted access for patients across Latvia is therefore essential. The new pharmaceutical logistics centre in Riga is a significant investment by a Latvian company in strengthening the country’s critical pharmaceutical supply infrastructure.”

Once the project is completed, we will significantly expand our distribution capacity and improve the efficiency, accuracy and traceability of our operations, while reducing our reliance on manual processes. If necessary, we will be able to increase the volume of medicine and medical supply deliveries by up to three times, allowing us to maintain uninterrupted supply even in the event of a sudden surge in demand or disruptions to international supply chains,” emphasised Chairman of AS Recipe Plus Board Mantas Jurkus.

Recipe Plus distributes more than 17,000 products, including medicines, food supplements, medical supplies, cosmetics and other pharmaceutical products. The company cooperates with more than 400 manufacturers worldwide and supplies products to more than 3,000 customers every day, including pharmacies, healthcare institutions, social care centres, and others. Recipe Plus is also one of the largest private taxpayers in Latvia’s healthcare sector. In 2025, the company paid nearly EUR 23 million in various taxes to the Latvian state budget.
